Day 12 - Gunnislake to Longborough in the Cotswalds

Time to move on again.  We had had s lovely stay in our little apartment.  Thank you Sharon.

My sister, Anne had lived in Plymouth working there for a few years, some time ago.  When she realised we were staying at Gunnislake she sent an email saying that she had really loved the National Trust property Cotehele, which was really nearby.  We had seen the signs and had decided to go and have a look at the gardens, as the property didn't open until 11am which was unfortunately too late for us as we were hoping to have another very big day, going to Bath ad well, on the way to the Cotswalds.  It looks as if the gardens and house are beautiful and another addition to the must do list...  Next time ...  The property is on the Tamar River.  I am now wondering if the river in Tasmania was named first or Launceston the town!!!  The river is also tidal and murky!

One of the things I've been doing as we drive around is looking up the National Trust properties as we drive past the signs and checking if we should/could visit them.  Also the English Heritage sites as we have a visitor pass for them as well.

On the way to Cornwall we passed the signs for Lydford Gorge and it looked interesting and went on the list.  Then the unit we were staying in has a guest book and one of the comments mentioned the gorge and what a good wall it was.

So we stopped in at the first carpark and spoke to the young man there.  We were at Devil's Gullet and there was a waterfall at the other end.  He explained it as this end was the men's end and the other the women's - bit sexist, but basically this end was more exciting.  We decided to go exciting!  It was an excellent walk and the Devil's Gullet was worth the visit.  Instead of taking 30 mins I think we may have been there for an hour.  Getting down there is interesting.  Most of the way has a good hand rail on the outside, but there is a bit where there is only a handrail on the cliff face.  The water moves thru very fast and is really contained.  Another National Trust success!!!!

By now we were running really late.  We were still planning to go to Bath...  Relying on GPS lady we set off...  Up the M5.  At some stage we had to change to the M4 but the instructions we got were indecipherable!  And we managed to end up back on the M5 instead of M4.  At this stage, we decided to give Bath a miss as we were getting further away from Bath, and Bath was 2 hours from Longborough where we are staying in the Cotswalds.

While we were trying to get to Bath, we did actually decide to get off the motorway and try an A road.  We kept going and ended up at Cirencester which turned out to be a happy accident.  There is a good little museum there which has a lovely collection of Roman mosaics.  It is also quite picturesque.

We still had a little while to go, so we headed off to Dairy Cottage, Longborough, our next little home.  When we got here, it is a little Cotswalds stone cottage, with a lounge, kitchen, downstairs loo, two bedrooms upstairs and a very nice bedroom.  It is part of a complex of buildings and assuming it is as old as it looks it has beams in the lounge room.

We had diner at the local pub the Coach and Horse.
