Day 3

Now, where was I?

Sorry about that, jetlag is a funny sort of thing!  Each evening about 6pm, I get woosy, and just need to eat and go to bed...  But some nights, we haven't been back in time, and I've been sleeping late.  So, I've gotten very behindish.

So, Day 3 saw us getting up nice and early to go to the British Museum to see the Pompeii exhibition for 9.10am....  Whose Idea was this????  Mine, of course!!!!  We did take the underground to Tottenham Court Rd.  Anyway, we loved the exhibition.  I think it is the third exhibition I've seen, and most of the exhibits are different each time.  This time they had photos of Pompeii and Herculaneum as they are now. Which made it even more evocative.  I'm not so keen on the plaster casts of people dying horrid deaths, but the wall paintings and personal artefacts are amazing.  Items really well laid out.

After we had finished looking at the exhibition, we had a quick zip thru the British Museum.  It is one of the great museums of the world.  But a word of warning, the toilets leave a lot to be desired!!!!!  There are not enough of them, and they pong quite badly.  First thing they were OK, but a second visit was not on my cards....

There are some highlight tours the Museum suggests, so we visited them, eg.
The Royal Game of Ur, the Lewis Chessmen, the Parthenon marbles and an Easter Island statue.  Some of my favourites are the Assyrian friezes as seen below.  The king obviously wanted to show how powerful he is due to the number of links he is killing....  He hadn't heard of less is more!

When we left, we had a cheap and cheerful lunch and then thought we could go and have a look at the Temple Church.  By golly it was hard to find!  The  of course, it wasn't open, but would be open again on Monday...  So, the we thought we'd walk to St Paul's.  Which we did. Then it rained so we had  scones and tea/coffee... And waited for it to stop, then we walked to the Museum of London.   We really enjoyed this museum, which follows the history of London thru to the present day.  There were royal baby clothes on display in recognition of the newborn Prince.

Peter did let us catch the underground home, thank goodness! And had a cheap and cheerful dinner at the local kebab shop. Then it was off to bed.
